This book is dedication to a dear friend Laura and my sister in law’s mother, Andrea, who lost their lives to the killer – Breast Cancer.

Your early forties are too young to die when you’ve only just begun to live.

You missed out on such wonderful events like the marriages of your daughters and the wonderful children they are blessed with.

Laura you made me laugh and you made me cry. It was a pleasure and fun to work with you. One day I’ll tell your story.

  Chapter 1

Bastian – Demon’s Lair Noir Valley

The smile plays at the corner of my lips as my gaze wanders around Demon Lair’s casino. The tables are full, and the slight clink of chips shuffling over the green cloth is music to my ears. Life is good and my belly is full. Best of all, Sugar Jay is no longer my problem. She’s Sundance’s. My smile deepens as I think of my baby sister all grown up and with a baby of her own. The place sure is quiet without her and her dramas. I take another sip of my beer and scratch my stomach and as I watch the room, one of the club’s women walks into my vision. My gaze wanders over her legs. They are long and tanned and my cock jerks. My gaze shifts further up her body. Her back is to me and I watch her ass as it wiggles. My gaze reaches her face, and I scowl at the blonde hair as an image of Eve and her brown locks, invades my thoughts. Shit, women, the bane of my life. I love women. They have their places and their uses. The ones like the one I’m watching. They know what I want, and they give me what I want. They are the ones I intend to stick to. Not only do they have their uses. They’re a lot less hassle than the hoity toity ladies who accompany the rich folks who frequent the casino. I call them, and they come running. Happy to accept to whatever I offer them for the night. No questions asked and no commitment expected. Shit, I don’t care who they fucked the night before or who they’ll fuck the next night. Not women like Eve. Not that she’s not my sort. Tits to fill a man’s hand with ample to spare. Shit, thinking about Eve’s tits has the blood in my cock heating up. No, she’s the serious sort and would demand more than the odd fuck from me. Fuck, she wouldn’t be up for all the fun of sharing either.

“Shit, Bastian. Get a room and stop thinking about fucking the women in public.”

I turn to Day, the boss. He’s a couple of years younger than me, and the River Demon’s President and I’m his second in command. “I wasn’t. I’m thinking about Poppy and how she’s a better cook than Sugar Jay.”

Day snorts as he settles into the chair next to mine. “When was the last time you visited your house, Bastian. Never mind tasted Poppy’ cooking.” Day’s lips twist as he takes a sip of his whisky “And don’t forget she’s a Davaro. That means trouble.”

I watch Day as he gives the room a sweeping glance. Demon’s Lair is busy, and the money is rolling in. “Is that your opinion of Firebird? That’s she’s trouble?” Firebird is Poppy’s older sister and Leon’s, the club’s Sergeant at Arms, Old Lady. It’s through them Poppy ended up at my place.

“She keeps Leon out of my hair. She’ll do.” The Davaro’s and Day go back. Their history is long and twisted. A puzzle to the club as Day refuses to talk about the bad blood between him and Clarence Davaro. We’ve done shit in our lives and the only guilt I have ever felt, was when we made the Davaro’s homeless. Taking their home did nothing to ease the anger in the man sat next to me. Day turns to face me. His gaze direct. “What about you, Bastian. Are you thinking of following in Leon’s footsteps?”

A chuckle rumbles deep in my chest and I drain my beer. With a shake of my head, I dismiss Eve. I haven’t seen her in a month. Not since she returned to Washington.

“Nope. You know me, Day. A different woman every night is just how I like it.” The dark haired, silver eyed witch resurfaces, mocking me and my frown returns. “I’m getting another drink – Want one?”

Day shakes his head as he rises from his seat. “I’ve a couple of calls to make.”

With Day gone, I wander over to the bar and order a beer. As I wait for Susie to open the bottle, I scan the room. I have an itch and it needs scratching. My gaze flickers to the floor show, a bit of a distraction, just enough to ensure t
he punters don’t pay too close attention to the cards. The serious players are in another room. T.J is in that room, monitoring the action. As I watch the door, a tall blonde walks out, and I smile at her. She holds a finger up; I nod back then turn back to Susie. I’ve an hour to kill before I have company for the night.

“If you don’t want to wait. I can take a break.” Her brown eyes sweep over me and she smiles as she winks. I’m not one to turn down an opportunity when it’s offered to me on a plate.

“We can party in my cabin.” Her gaze glances over my shoulder and I turn to watch the blonde return with a tray of drinks to the room. After she disappears inside, I turn back to Susie. “Still interested?”

Susie’s fingers trail over my arm as she winks once more. “I guess I can warm you up before Candy joins us.”

“Don’t worry, Doll. I’ve enough stamina to pleasure you both.” The low purr at the back of my throat has the waitress’s smile spreading. She opens a bottle of water and I watch her slim neck as the liquid slides down her throat and I lick my lips in anticipation. Then she’s looking at me and there’s a gleam in her brown gaze which has my cock twitching.

“If you can’t – I’m sure Candy won’t mind finishing me off.”

My chuckle turns to a guffaw and several sets of eyes turn our way. “Five minutes. My cabin or don’t bother.”

Susie nods as I collect my beer. I search the room and find Leon and Firebird sitting in a couple of chairs away from the gaming tables. I have an itch to scratch. Both it and Susie will have to wait.

“Firebird – You’re looking as beautiful as ever.” I reach over and drop a kiss on the redhead’s cheek. “Leon. I didn’t think you’d make it tonight.” I wink at Firebird who raises her bottle to her lips, and I watch her throat as she swallows her beer.

  “Eyes on the table, Bastian.”

“You wouldn’t deprive a besotted fool like me from looking at something as exquisite as Firebird?” I slap Leon on the back as I settle into the chair beside the club’s Sargent at Arms. I glance at Leon and watch as he strokes the back of Firebird’s neck. Like the other brothers of the River Demons, I’ve never had the pleasure of Firebird’s body. She’s out of bounds and we respect Leon and Firebird and play by their rules. If she wasn’t his old lady, I’d make a play for her. She may be a Davaro, but I’d be happy to fuck her. She has her kinks and fuck her is all I would have done.

“I’m used to him looking at me, Leon.”

“Doesn’t mean I have to like it.” The possessive growl Leon emits, has me chuckling and Firebird chortles as she places her half-drunk bottle on the table. She turns to her old man and places his face between her hands, leans forward and kisses him. It’s no peck on the cheek either as they devour each other. As I watch them, Eve makes her absences known by intruding on my thoughts once more and I wonder where she is and if she is with someone getting fucked. My chuckle is more of a snort. I’m fantasizing about a woman who I’ve never kissed. My fingers tingle. I’ve touched her. Felt the velvetiness of her flesh in my gasp as I stroked her skin. But I’ve never tasted her. I shuffle in my seat as my cock twitches. I’ve two ladies lined up for tonight’s games. They’ll more than satisfy this hunger in me. I take another sip of my beer, then turn to Leon.

“When you two lovebirds have finished, Leon and I have business to discuss.” Firebird’s chuckle is light as she leans back in her chair. Her amber gaze on me. Although there is a gleam in her gaze, there is a slight pinch to her lips.

“Which poor sucker do you intend to swindle out of their home tonight?” The barb in Firebird’s tone goes over me and I flash her one of my smiles which have had lesser men looking for an escape. She doesn’t flinch. Why would she when she has Leon wrapped around her finger.

“If you were mine. I’d put you over my knee, Firebird. Your home was a one off.”

Leon leans towards Firebird and takes her hand in his. “I’ll be back shortly.” His gaze goes to one of the tables. “Fancy a game.” The warmth in his voice as he talks to Firebird brings Eve to my mind again and I shake my head as I rise from my seat. I don’t want what Leon and cousin Twiggy have.

Firebird shakes her head at her lover “One gambler in the family is enough.”

Leon and I make our way outside and I breathe in the air. Demon’s Lair is more than a casino. It’s a riverboat and tonight, like most nights, we are sailing on the Mississippi. We won’t go far from Noir Valley. We’ll probably be on the river for about three hours and then return to Noir Valley.

“What did you want to talk about?” Leon’s gaze is fixed on the river.

“There’s a new shipment due in a couple of days.” I look towards the sky and watch as a star or two twinkles, then I turn to Leon. “How do you feel about leaving Firebird in charge while we’re gone?” Leon opens his mouth, then closes it without any sound coming out. “She’ll not be on her own. Copper will be here and so will Flash.”

Leon draws in a deep breath, his gaze still on the river. “What’s Day’s opinion?”

“For all his bluff, he’s fond of Firebird. Anyway, he trusts her.” This is something we’ve talked about. Making Firebird part of the River Demons bonds her to us.

“And if something happens – Goes wrong.”

I shrug. “It’s a learning curve for her and you, Besides Copper will take full responsibility. After all, he’s the one training her. Agree to it, Leon and we’ll run it past the rest of the club”

Copper earned his tag because of his love of the sun. He’s not one of the officers, but he’s far enough up the hierarchy that we trust him. When he’s not working for us. You’ll find him on the top deck, naked. There isn’t a tan line on his body. Leon scratches his dark mane of dreads and blows the air out caught in his chest. “You know once she has her hands on the reigns, she’ll never let go.”

“That’ll be Day’s problem – Not mine..” With a slap to his back, I turn to my quarters. “I’ll see you in the morning.” I have my night’s entertainment waiting for me and my own demons to diminish. As I open the door to my cabin, Eve’ face torments me. I can’t have Eve. She’ll have some other fucker screwing her, and with a shake of my head I dismiss her. Lying on the bed naked and with her legs spread, is Susie. I smile a I slip the buckle on my belt, closing not only the cabin door, but a door on Eve and her mystery man.

Eva- Noir Nights, Restaurant, Noir Valley

I bite back my groan and force a smile I’m not feeling. The only reason I agreed to this date is to take my mind off the burly biker who for several months has invaded my dreams and every waking thought. Bastian St John has a lot to answer and the reason I’ve had so many restless nights.

“Will you be in Noir Valley for long?”

I blink and bring my attention back to my date. There isn’t anything wrong with the man sat opposite me. He’s good looking, clean and has a cute smile. It’s just there isn’t any sparkle. There is no rampant wanton lust racing through my body. No feelings or inclination to jump his bones drag him over the table and have my wicked way or desire to climb into bed with him. My fingers tighten around the stem of my glass and I take a large swallow of the house red. If my dreams are anything to go by, my libido is in full working order and I’m not worried about my sex drive dying on me. Nope, not when I know if it were the biker sat opposite me, dinner would be at my place with its easy access to my bedroom and a bed. Not some swanky restaurant. Shit, the way my pussy pulses in Bastian’s company, dinner would be the furthest thing from my mind. With a shake of my head, I dismiss the Biker and all notions of having sex tonight. “No, just long enough to tidy up Mama’s affairs and sell the house.”

“We could have some fun while you’re here, Eve.” My date’s smile deepens, and he reaches over for my hand, covering my fingers with his. Beneath his grasp my fingertips curl and I force myself to relax as I withdrew my hand and reach for the wine bottle to top up my never-ending glass.

  “It was
nice catching up, Tyler. But let’s leave the past where it belongs.” I smile, shake my head and take another sip of the wine. If I drink enough wine, I might be tempted to bed my date. Anything to rid Bastian from my thoughts. Tyler’s lips pinch and a shadow flickers in his gray eyes. It could be the cast of the shadow from the flame of the candle, but a cold shiver slithers down my spine and I dismiss the predatory gleam in his gaze.

“Don’t be like that, Eve. What harm can there be. It’s not like we haven’t had sex before.”

I pour more wine and take another large swallow of the alcohol. For the last couple of years work has taken over my life, making my social life almost nonexistence. Tonight, was to change all that. Thanks to the alcohol, my blood is warming up, but there is no fire in my pussy. It’s been a while since I’ve had sex and I wouldn’t mind a night of hot forgettable bliss to take away the pain of the last few months. But for some strange reason my body wants the unattainable. With a twisted smile, I shake my head. “It’s just not the right time, Tyler.” I glance at my watch. “Look. Thanks for tonight, but I don’t believe in doing do-overs or going over old history. And that’s all it would be.”

“Eve.” Tyler drops his napkin as he rises from his seat. His fingers firm as they grasp around my wrist. A cold chill lingers where he touches me, and I shake my arm in an attempt to free myself from his touch. It’s another moment or two before he lets go. “Don’t be hasty, Eve. We can have another dinner date before you leave.” His smile deepens as he steps closer. His breath stifling against my cheek. “You might change your mind.”
